What Can and Can’t Go Down the Drain
Sometimes we take the drains in our home for granted; that we can throw anything in them and they’ll just keep on trucking without any plugs or trouble. Here at Ermen, we know that’s not true. While the plumbing in our homes can stand up to a lot, there are some things that just shouldn’t go down any drains. Read on to find out what can and can’t go down the drain.
First, let’s talk about what can go out through the pipes. This is a pretty easy list, as anything liquid, or just about anything that you would drink can go down the drain. Milk, water, juice, and coffee without the grinds are all safe for your drains and pipes. Grease should never go down the drain as it solidifies when it cools down and can cause clogs.
What else shouldn’t go down the drain? Anything solid is a great place to start. Even small bits of food over time can cause a build-up, which will clog your pipes. This also includes hair in the shower or tub; It’s best to have some type of drain screen to keep hair from getting in the pipes. If you notice a clog, avoid using chemicals; vinegar and baking soda will often help. If that doesn’t work and you’re not able to reach the hair clog, it’s best to give us a call.
